the status of their residents. As you tour, make note of their dress,
their grooming, their demeanor. Do they seem comfortable? Active? Engaged?
Or tired, haggard, or languishing? Either observation is indicative of
the level of care the residents are receiving.
Tip #2: Ask to View an Activity
Assisted living facilities are responsible for providing residents activities
that benefit their mood, spirit, and mental and physical health. If possible,
ask to view one of these activities on your tour. Not only will you see
what activities your family member might have access to, but you can also
gauge the staff friendliness and attentiveness as they conduct the activity.
Tip #3: Eat with Your Tour Guide
If possible, ask to have lunch in the facility's cafeteria while on
your tour. Nutrition is obviously important, but having quality meals
served regularly is also important to the overall happiness of the residents.
Partaking in the food there—and any cuisine questions you can ask
your tour guide—will give you an insight into the facility's menu.
Tip #4: Keep an Eye—and Nose—Out for Cleanliness
As you tour a facility, keep a sharp eye open for cleanliness, not just
in the common areas, but wherever you can see and smell. While one bad
smell may not be enough to disqualify an entire facility, frequent bad
