In a recent case of elder abuse, a 50 year old woman used aggressive force and threatened to kill her 86 year old mother. Zaruhi Pilikyan has plead not guilty to the charges, despite multiple assault claims and a first-degree burglary charge. The woman was found and arrested in the Glendale area for breaking and entering. After her arrest, she was also charged with acts of violence against her elderly mother. Pilikyan allegedly assaulted her mother by shoving her against cabinets and threatening to kill her in front of her sister. She broke into her sister's home a second time and forced a wad of money into her elderly mother's mouth, causing severe strain on her jaw.
The woman's actions were allegedly rooted in her frustration from being cut off state-funded caregiver assistance after her mother moved out of Pilikyan's Hollywood home. She was held in custody with a $100,000 bail until her next court date. As seen in many recent incidents, money often plays a key role in elder abuse cases. Sadly, many caregivers become greedy or have malicious intentions when they are overseeing and elderly citizen. For this reason, many of these individuals become victims of financial elder abuse. Due to their age and inability to care for their own needs, they are often targeted by untrustworthy caretakers.
